Halloween retail stores are bracing for a busy weekend.

Spending for this spooky holiday is supposed to go up this year, not just on candy sales, which are expected to top $2 billion, but on everything else as well.

A steady stream of customers perused the aisles at Austintown's Halloween Mania on Friday afternoon.

"Just trying to find something unique or different," said Anthony Grachanin of Campbell.

The store owners said if you can think of it, they can help you out.

Do you need a top hat, a cowboy hat or a viking hat? Or how about a Peter Pan hat?

Do you want to dress as Tom Cruise, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man or a Smurf?

If you have a date, there's always eggs and bacon or maybe ketchup and mustard.

"Gone are the plastic costume days. Now things are more intricate. People are expecting more for their money," said Halloween Mania owner Jeff Lyda.

As they expect more, they actually shell out more.

"Looking anywhere $50 or less," Grachanin said.

This year, the average American is expected to spend $72 on Halloween, which is up from 2010.

"The biggest change is just the growth and just across the board interest. It's not just a children's holiday any more. Its definitely adult driven," Lyda said.

And the adults are getting creative. If it's not the costume, it's the makeup.

"This is one of the latex appliances we have at the store," said Halloween Mania employee Michael Pheil.

Halloween Mania now has employees specializing in the blood and gore.

Once you dress the kids and yourself, don't forget about man's best friend. You have plenty to choose from. He could be a king, a doctor or even a cowboy.

Whatever you ultimately pick, the Halloween stores will be ready to ring you up through trick or treat time.

For a list of those trick or treat times, click here.

If the outside of one Lowellville home doesn't scare you, the inside probably will.

Brian Wharry has been turning his parents' home at 180 W. Walnut St. into a haunted house for the past five years. And even though he recently moved, he just couldn't take the display with him.

"We decided to keep it down here. We looked at doing it at my house, but it's too hard and this room is really built for it," said Wharry.

Wharry has made a few changes to this year's haunted house. Strobe lights now line the ceiling and a few new faces have been added.

"It will actually be 12 years in November that we've been together and we are getting married in May," shared Wharry's fiancee, Adrianne Logozzo.

So, does the haunted house scare her anymore?

"Yes, they do at night. I don't like them at night, by myself," said Logozzo.

The theme of the house is horror movie characters and Wharry has gotten almost all of them. The whole collection is an $8,000 investment that he is happy to share with the community for free.

"We get kids of all ages and that's what's nice because animatronics cater to young ages, middle ages, we get adults that come through here," said Wharry.

Wharry's display continues to grow, so much so that he had to cut two of the characters from this year's display. In the future he's looking to expand the creepy hauntings to the outside of the home.

Wharry said he will be keeping the house open even longer during trick-or-treat hours to make sure everyone who wants to, can get a good scare.

It's the most unlikely place you'd expect to see huge bags of candy -- a dentist's office. But on Monday night that's exactly what you could find being brought into Dr. Bauer and Martuccio's office in Warren for the second annual Halloween candy buy-back.

"We're encouraging our patients to come in and donate any candy, especially the chewy, sticky stuff that we ask them to refrain from eating, " said Dr. Brad Bauer.

The candy buy-back is in recognition of Orthodontic Health Month. Children got $1 for each pound of candy they brought in. The candy will then be shipped to our troops overseas.

"To thank our men and women abroad for the freedom that we enjoy," said Bauer.

Tonni Yocum of Braceville and her three daughters brought in five pounds of candy to send overseas.

"We just wanted to do something good for the troops and to get rid of our candy cause we had plenty," said Yocum.

"I didn't mind, cause I don't usually eat too much candy, actually, so I didn't really mind and it was for a good thing," said Maddy Yocum.

The dentist's office also allowed patients to draw pictures to send over to the troops. Last year, they collected about 500 pounds of candy, and this year they did even better by collecting over 500 pounds. The candy will be shipped overseas later this week.

"We thank all the people that have contributed and enjoyed this with us," said Bauer.

After a long afternoon of trick or treating, many families ordered pizza on Sunday night instead of cooking.

One local pizza shop used the increased business to give back. Wedgewood Pizza in Boardman donated a portion of their profits on Halloween to the United Way.

The pizza shop's owner, Anthony Pellegrini, said he's happy to help.

"I've worked with them before and seen what they do for the Valley. It's great. I think it's wonderful. Anything I can do, I love to help, just to put smiles on people's faces," said Pellegrini.

The United Way gives funding to more than 70 programs across Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.
