Well before the doors even opened more than one hundred people line up outside of the Salvation Army on Glenwood Avenue, all looking for a helping hand this upcoming holiday season.
Major James Foley says, "We focus on families that would struggle during Christmas, because of their income. They might not be able to provide toys for their children."
So, for five days, Mahoning County residents can sign up for the Salvation Army Christmas Assistance Program.
Crystal Hudson says, "To me its saving me money. I'm just thankful to be able to do it and make a better Christmas this year."
In 2007, four thousand local families received either toys or food vouchers around Christmas time, but in light of the economy, officials expect that number to go up this year.
Shakela Hudson says, "I have two little girls. It helps a whole lot especially with the economy. You know gas prices and everything, so you don't have money to really do anything. So it helps out a whole lot."
But its not just the people who need help. The Salvation Army also relies on the kindness of others.
And as the assistance applications pile up, officials hope outside donations don't dwindle.
