Vigil for Domestic Violence

Stories of domestic violence. On display at Warren's Courthouse Square as a remembrance to those that have suffered it firsthand.

"The red outlines are silent witnesses.  Those are the people that have been killed because of domestic violence," says Pat Porter, Executive Director of Someplace Safe, a domestic violence help center in Trumbull County.

Domestic Violence effects one in four people in United States, a majority of those being women.  Events like this, remember those who have been lost, as well as celebrate the survivors.  It's also an opportunity to educate people about domestic violence.

Tracy Snider, told those attending that there are for struggles for people to get out of a violent situation.  "Lots of people will say, why doesn't she just leave? but I'm here to say tonight that it's not that easy. There are many obstacles that prevent women from being able to take action."

The other message being stressed is that there is a way out.   Groups like Someplace Safe in Trumbull County are available to people that may feel stuck in a violent situation.

Porter added, "We not only provide shelter, but we provide support programs.  We have support groups for both women and children.  We have a legal advocacy program that helps the women fill out paper work if they need protection orders."

The help is available, and the group hopes it can prevent more innocent people from becoming victims.
