Newton Falls Arbitration

The teacher's strike in Newton Falls is on hold, after a four day strike.  No deal has been reached, but Thursday, the teachers are going back to the classroom. Take a last look at the teacher's strike, because it's over.  Members of both the Newton Falls classroom teachers association and the school board's negotiation team have decided to turn their unresolved issues over to binding arbitration , which means teachers will be back in school.

John Creatura, Union Representative;  "WE'RE HAPPY THAT WE'VE ENDED THE STRIKE. AND WE'RE GOING TO GET A RESOLUTION BY AN ARBITRATOR LOOKING AT BOTH SIDES, LOOKING AT ALL THE EVIDENCE AND MAKING A DECISION."

"WE'RE JUST GLAD TO GET OUR TEACHERS BACK INTO THE CLASSROOM, BACK IN FRONT OF THE KIDS AND BACK TO A SENSE OF NORMALCY."

And just in time.  After nearly a week, concerned parents were growing frustrated with the situation and ready to take drastic measures. Hundreds of parents came out to the community center tonight to petition to have the schools closed until an agreement could be reached. But now they're going home celebrating the teachers are coming back to class

Sandra Turner, Parent;  "IT'S JUST SO EXCITING OH MY GOD!"

Sandra Turner feels if parents hadn't put pressure on the school board, the strike may have very well continued.

"WE LET THEM KNOW FIRST HAND WHAT OUR INTENTION WAS TO GET THE SCHOOLS CLOSED AND TO FORCE THEM INTO NEGOTIATIONS."

However it happened, these parents are just happy to hear their kids can get back to school.

Bridget Hunt, Parent;  "MY KIDS HAVE NOT ATTENDED SCHOOL SINCE THURSDAY SO I'M EXCITED THAT THEY CAN GO BACK AND GET AN EDUCATION WITH THEIR PROPER TEACHERS AND IT IS NOT HELD AGAINST THEM."

And kids seem happy as well.

Autumn Long, Student;  "I'M EXCITED BECAUSE THE TEACHERS ARE COMING BACK AND WE WON'T HAVE THOSE SUBSTITUTES."
