It was not a routine day in the Newton Falls Schools District but both teachers and administrators say day one of the strike was peaceful.
The teachers voted to strike Thursday, moments after rejecting the board's last offer. The main sticking point is wages.
Union representative John Creatura says the district already has enough money to give teachers the raises they need, but the district says that's not necessarily true.
"We brought that to their attention and recognized the state is offering about a half million dollars more than they thought," Creatura said.
Schools Superintendent Dave Wilson says more students showed up for class today that he expected. Normally, fourteen hundred seventy students attend school in the district, today five hundred forty three showed up for class.
And some parents who sent their children to school say they are not happy with the way the striking teachers are handling the situation.
"I feel they are trying to use the kids as pawns in the strike," said Amanda Konyecsni. "She (daughter) spent yesterday's math class learning the principal and superintendent would be playing head games with her, not to listen to them, and the subs were hobos, don't listen to them."
The striking teachers denied the allegations.
"The one thing I know for sure, these things do not last forever and I would like them to remember they will teach those kids again an deal with the parents," said Superintendent Dave Wilson.
No new negotiation sessions have been scheduled.
