Teachers in the Newton Falls School District head to the picket line in less than eight hours. They overwhelmingly rejected the school board's last and best offer Thursday night, with two main conflicts, busing and wages. Behind these closed doors, Newton Falls teachers reject the school board's latest contract, not agreeing on salaries.
"WE DESERVE A FAIR AND DECENT WAGE THAT IS IN THE BUDGET."
Teachers say the district already has enough money to give them raises, but the school board says a two-percent raise...and the return of high school busing, depends on how much money they get from the state.
"IF WE HAVE A GUARANTEE OF THE MONEY. WE WANT TO KNOW THE STATE'S GIVING US MONEY-THERE'S A DOLLAR FIGURE SET ASIDE-IF THAT'S THERE, THEN WE DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM PAYING OUR PEOPLE."
"TEACHERS SAY ONE OF THE MAIN STICKING POINTS IS JUST HOW LONG THESE CONTRACTS WILL LAST. EVERY YEAR WE COME BACK TO THESE NEGOTIATIONS, AND WE'RE CONFIDENT THERE'S MONEY IN THIS DISTRICT TO OFFER MORE THAN A ONE YEAR RAISE."
"PINS AND NEEDLES EVERY YEAR AT THIS TIME. WE DON'T LIKE IT. THE PARENTS DON'T LIKE IT, LET'S HAMMER IT OUT."
But until it's resolved, subs will take over the classrooms, that way students don't miss out on their education.
"AS LONG AS THE KID AREN'T BEING PUSHED INTO THE MIDDLE OF IT, ADULTS CAN TAKE COMMENTS, KIDS CAN'T TAKE COMMENTS."
Members of the teachers union say they're willing to start negotiations at anytime, until then, they'll stand firm together, teaching outside school doors.
