Chamber Opposing Mandatory Sick Time by Gerry Ricciutti

"Commerical Metal Forming" operates inside part of the old Commercial Intertech plant in Youngstown.  It's head of human resources, Bill Pounds,  is opposed to that statewide effort to force Ohio businesses to provide paid sick leave for their workers, calling the idea "reckless."

The "Healthy Families Act" would require seven days of paid sick leave for any company with twenty-five workers or more that could be taken in hourly increments over the course of a year.  If placed on the ballot and approved, Ohio would become the first state in the country to have mandatory paid sick time.  It's something Pounds claims could hurt Commercial's ability to do business.

But supporters claim similar measures are already in place in other countries, prompting Dale Butland of the "Healthy Families" campaign to question "Why's it going to hurt us?"

All the same, the Regional Chamber is putting together a "speakers bureau" of people like Pounds to voice their support as well as it's opposition.  The chamber's Tony Paglia says "We can ill-afford to make it harder to bring business into the state."

At this point, supporters of the "Healthy Families" campaign claim "independent" polling, as they call it, shows the measure has seventy percent of Ohioans in favor of the idea.

Opponents, who I'm told are willing to spend up to ten million dollars between now and November to defeat it, argue much of "Healthy Families" support is coming from labor unions, like the SEIU, which are pushing this idea as a way of getting more people to the polls to vote in the Presidential election.
