About a half a dozen Mahoning County communities face a huge dilemma. Their 911 provider is leaving the area in August, so fire departments must find a replacement fast. Mandy Hackman has the details.
Fire departments, trustees and commissioners come together for one goal, finding new dispatch services for Western Mahoning County.
Mahoning County 911 center currently takes all the calls, but fire and EMS services for Ellsworth, Jackson, Milton, Berlin and Green Townships and Beloit Village, they all get dispatched to a privately owned company, Med Corp. That is until the beginning of August.
"We recently got word the company will go out of business July 30," Chief Assistant Prosecutor Nick Modarelli said.
Fire companies thought Mahoning County 911 could answer the calls. But officials say the center doesn't handle fire calls for one, and two, there's not enough time.
"They were talking about modifying the plan. That's something the statute sets forth the procedure for doing that, and it's not possible to do it by the end of the month," Modarelli said.
Not to mention the time it takes for training and installing new technology.
So the fire companies have to find services from other neighboring communities, at least temporarily.
Green Township, for example, is looking at Beaver Township or Canfield.
"Both dispatch centers and Sebring...have quality services. All those could handle the load and really be an asset for what we're trying to build," Green Township Fire Chief Todd Baird said.
Departments have until the end of the month to let the 911 center know who it should transfer calls to, making sure all communities stay protected.
