Trumbull County 911 Plan by Peggy Sinkovich

Trumbull County's 911 planning commission will soon be asked to consider a proposal that would consolidate some emergency dispatching services.

A move that many of the independent dispatch centers have been against.

Right now the eight individual dispatch centers handle emergency calls and dispatching for their communities.  But a new proposal written by the county's 911 director would change that, it calls for Niles, Warren and the county's 911 center to be the primary answering points.

The individual centers, which are primarily staffed with one dispatcher, would have calls transferred to them from one of the three main centers.

"Keep your dispatch center, we will take 911 calls and then transfer so it will eliminate a one person dispatching center from being overwhelmed in a specific situation," said 911 director Mike Dolhancryk.

The Niles police chief isn't sure the new plan is a good idea.  "When you start putting another step into something, what does it cause, another delay," Simone said.

But Dolhancryk doesn't believe there would be a delay.  He also says the plan will help county officials save money because they would not have to purchase the same equipment for every center.

The planning commission meets Tuesday but it is not known when a decision on the new plan will be made.
