Warren Fireworks by Peggy Sinkovich

The loud bangs and booms that seem to go along with the July 4th weekend is something those living in Warren do not want to hear. And residents here have made their feelings known to city officials.

"As mayor, I receive more calls during the year regarding fireworks abuse more than any other problem in the city," said Mayor Mike O'Brien.  This year, the city says they will not tolerate the use of illegal fireworks.

"All the police officers have been instructed to no longer ignore firework complaints not like we ignored, but they were low priority because it is the fourth of July, but they have gotten out of hand," said Capt. Tim Bowers.

Smoke bombs, sparklers and other fireworks that you can buy at the local grocer, are allowed.  The fireworks such as Roman Candles, where you have to sign a form saying you will be taking them out of the state of Ohio, are not allowed.  If you are found to have the illegal fireworks you could find yourself in a courtroom next week explaining your actions to a judge.

City officials say they are also concerned about the number of accidents and injuries that occur with the use of illegal fireworks.

"A finger can't be replaced, a hand can't be replaced, an eye can't be replaced, we are asking for cooperation from citizens, we are going to do everything we can do," said Fire Chief Ken Nussle.

The mayor says he wants people to enjoy the holiday and urges those who want to watch fireworks to go to a professional show, such as the one that will be held at Packard Park Friday evening.
