Black Widow Found in Bag of Grapes by Dan Martin

Amanda Masotto and her mom, Vikki Spencer, got more than they bargained for in a bag of grapes they bought at the grocery store Saturday night.

"I saw something that looked like a tomato stem, I thought it was, and I was going to reach in and grab it, but then I realized it was a spider and I threw the bag and walked away.  And my mom checked, and she actually saw the hour-glass red on her belly, and that's when I kind of freaked out a little bit.", says Amanda Masotto of Leona Street in Sharpsville.

Masotto immediately got on the Internet to try and identify the arachnid while her mom put the spider in a jar.  Then they took the grapes, and the unwanted visitor, back where they were purchased, the Giant Eagle in Hermitage.

"They just said, you know this happens, which I've never heard of it happening, but, that's what they did tell us.", says Masotto.

Apparently the grapes came from Mexico, so Masotto thinks the spider did too.

Amanda and her family don't blame Giant Eagle for the black widow, they say sometimes when produce is brought in from other countries, you never know what's coming along for the ride.

"Now my mom's all worried about southern corn, or lettuce from the south, or anything else that we get.", says Masotto.

The stow-away looked more dead than alive when we saw it.  But just the thought of a very venomous spider in her kitchen is enough to give Masotto the creeps.

"It said on the Internet that you don't always feel the bite, so that's what worried us is that I did have my hand in the bag and I didn't feel anything so I wasn't sure, and it said about twenty-four hours later you would feel symptoms, but I didn't feel anything, so..."

Amanda says they'll still shop at Giant Eagle, just not for grapes anymore.
