Having your child abducted is one of the biggest fears of parents...this afternoon response groups from across the Valley got together in Newton Falls for a first of its kind training seminar, on how to respond to a child abduction.
It's called the Trumbull County Child Abduction Response Team, or C.A.R.T. for short.... an effort to improve the response time for officials to find a missing child. Today they created a life like scenario where a child goes missing from an after school event.
"THEN AS THE WITNESSES COME IN WE PUT TOGETHER THAT THE CHILD WAS POSSIBLY ABDUCTED. SO THEN IT GOES INTO A DIFFERENT MODE. AND THEN WITH THAT WE JUST KEPT GATHERING INFORMATION AND TRACKING A TIME LINE ALL THE WAY THROUGH AS TO WHERE WE WERE ABLE TO FINALLY LOCATE THE CHILD."--Bruce Simeone Niles Police Chief
After investigating the scene of the abduction, and witness statements, authorities were drawn to this location, just a short distance away from where the child was taken..
"WE'RE ACTUALLY ON SCENE NOW. THE S.W.A.T. TEAM IS GOING TO COME IN AND BREECH A LOCATION WHERE WE'VE TRACED DOWN THE ABDUCTOR AND THE CHILD THAT'S BEING HELD HOSTAGE."--Jim Luonuansuu Trumbull Co. C.A.R.T.
And of course in a mock situation everyone comes out safely. But the purpose for C.A.R.T. is to apply what they learn should a real abduction take place. Those involved say they're pleased with how everything turned out.
"THE SCENARIO WENT EXCELLENT. THE ONE ISSUE THAT WE THOUGHT WE WOULD HAVE WOULD BE COMMUNICATIONS."--Bruce Simeone Niles Police Chief
"EVERYBODY WORKED TOGETHER. ONE OF MY CONCERNS WAS HOW ALL OF THESE AGENCIES WITH DIFFERENT RANK STRUCTURE AND PERSONNEL WERE GOING TO WORK TOGETHER. AND EVERYONE PUT ALL RANK AND ISSUES ASIDE AND JUST WORKED LIKE THEY WERE ON THE SAME DEPARTMENT."---Tom Colosimo Trum. C.A.R.T. Coordinator
