Newton Falls Gunshots by Dan Martin

For the past few weeks, residents of a quiet Newton Falls neighborhood say they've heard what sounds like gunshots all around their homes.

"Every couple days or so we'll hear something, and once in a while, rarely it's like one, usually it's two or three consecutive, and we thought maybe at first it was homemade M-80's or something.", says Angel Duffield who lives on Liberty Street.

Police were called, but couldn't catch anyone in the act.

"They found no evidence at the time, and they determined it possibly was fireworks.", says Chief Robert Carlson with the Newton Falls Police Department.

Then on Wednesday, the man who recently bought this vacant home reported finding bullet holes on the sides and back of the house. When the cops came to check it out, they found the first real evidence of a shooting.

"The building had been struck by gunfire, they found trees that had been struck by gunfire.", says Chief Carlson.

One of the rounds was recovered and sent to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation for testing.  Now the questions are who, and why would someone shoot at the houses?  Chief Carlson says, "At this time we have no indication if it was juveniles or adults, but whoever it is, it's a high powered weapon that they are using."

Angel says she hasn't heard any shots for at least a week, but loud noises are usually few and far between on West Liberty Street.

"We're in Newton Falls, you figure it's cool, it's safe, it's not like Cleveland...We haven't had any drive-bys, or anything like that, praise God, but, you know, when you hear it, it really startles you.", says Duffield.

Chief Carlson says there are no suspects and no one in custody at this time.
