The city of Warren is looking to re-establish a decade-old system, called the Council of Governments. And city council members are looking to Summit County as a model. Warren leaders feel it's important to revive Trumbull County's Council of Governments after a 10 year layoff. The mayor says the the central focus is to get Trumbull county cities, townships, and smaller communities involved in working regionally.
Warren Mayor, Michael O'Brien; "AS WARREN GOES, SO GOES TRUMBULL COUNTY. SO I THINK WE NEED TO THINK IN THAT TYPE OF ATMOSPHERE MORE . AND NO LONGER ARE WE COMPETING AGAINST EACH OTHER. AND NO LONGER IS WINNER TAKE ALL MENTALITY."
Warren is hoping to incorporate a similar model that was put forth in Summit County...an area where it's biggest city Akron has shown economic growth and development in recent years. Many give the credit the city's mayor of 22 years, Don Plusquellic. The guest speaker says its all about starting small and building relationships.
"WE NEED TO WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CAN FIND WAYS TO COOPERATE AND HAVE A WIN-WIN SITUATION LOCALLY WHILE WE ARE TRULY COMPETING WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD."
Warren City Council President Robert Marchese says the future's not going to get any easier, but he's confident moving forward with the support of the Trumbull 100 and Warren Regional Chamber.
"THE MORE WE COMMUNICATE THE MORE WE WORK TOGETHER. THE MORE WE USE OUTSIDE ENTITIES. IN THIS CASE LIKE THE CHAMBER. I THINK WE CAN GAIN FROM EACH OTHER."
"ELECTED OFFICIALS ARE AS GOOD AS THE SUPPORT AROUND THEM. AND I THINK FOR WHAT WE'RE DOING , THIS IS A GOOD STARTING POINT."
The city will now draft an outline on how and when to proceed.
