Smith Arraignment

Two more arrests have doubled the number of people under suspicion in connection with Youngstown's latest murder.  We spoke with detectives about how they pieced together a case against the suspects.

Ken Centorame, Youngstown Police Department;  "APPROXIMATELY A WEEK AGO A YOUNG MAN WAS KILLED IN A DRIVEWAY ON RUTLEDGE."

And thanks to quick work by Youngstown detectives...four people are now behind bars, all allegedly connected to the murder of Demar Flores.  Charles Smith Junior and Regionald Gilchrist are the latest to be arrested.

Centorame;   "THE VICTIM PULLED INTO THE DRIVEWAY OF THE PEOPLE THAT HE KNEW AT 54 RUTLEDGE, THEY EXCHANGED CONVERSATION and 2 GUNMAN APPEARED AND ATTEMPTED TO ROB THE DRIVER."

Detectives interviewed several witnesses. But they began to notice their stories didn't fit together, and when the facts failed to add up, the one time witnesses quickly became suspects.

Centorame;  "THE VICTIM WAS ONLY 18 YEARS OLD AND ALL THESE INDIVIDUALS...SOME WHERE AS YOUNG AS 22 AND AS OLD AS 37. TO PERPETRATE A ROBBERY AND MURDER THE YOUNG VICTIM IS TROUBLING TO US."

Both Smith and Gilchrist are charged with aggravated robbery and murder.  And Smith, the alleged trigger man, turned himself in on Monday.

Gerald Ingram, Smith's Attorney;  "HE CAME TO MY OFFICE, WE CALLED THE TASK FORCE, WE ARRANGED FOR TASK FORCE OFFICERS TO COME PICK MR. SMITH UP."

Sarah Beck and Hassan Merriweather also face aggravated robbery and murder charges in the case.  All four suspects are set for pre-trial later this month.
