BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) - A professor of internal medicine at the Northeast Ohio Medical University is this year's Athena Award winner.
Dr. Elisabeth Young was given the award for helping to train and mentor the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Young, who lives in Poland, graduated from the university in 1985 and has been a faculty member since 1990. She is the vice president for Health Affairs and dean of the College of Medicine at NEOMED.
Twenty-one women from the area were nominated for this year's award, which is given by the Regional Chamber of Commerce. On Thursday, they held a dinner and awards banquet in Boardman.
The women were nominated for professional achievements and work in community service. They could also be nominated for support of other women in business.
Not only were businesswomen honored, but female students who plan to attend colleges in the area received scholarships, too.
The Chamber has been giving out the Athena Awards since 1990.
