Women looking to have an abortion in the Mahoning Valley will now have to travel to Akron, Cleveland or Pittsburgh.

The Mahoning Women's Center in Youngstown closed its doors Tuesday. The clinic opened in 1976. Owner Maryann Baker decided to retire after 34 years and the building will be sold.

Baker's son, Tim, said his mother worked hard over the years to promote women's rights.

"Making the National Organization for Women prominent in the city of Youngstown," he said. "She made her passion into a career, and because of what she did, she was able to advance a lot of the rights that women now enjoy today."

Members of the Mahoning County Right to Life said it is positive and good for the community.

Yes, it is a terrible loss to the valley. Women should have a choice and it is sad that no one would take over the business for her. Thank you Maryann Baker!

I don't know if I could ever have an abortion but I still believe that the woman should be given the option. Thank you Maryann Baker for giving the woman the option. It's too bad that someone couldn't take it over so women could stay locally if the situation arose that she felt that was her only option.
