A nursing student from Salem has been upgraded from critical to fair condition after jumping off an interstate overpass south of Pittsburgh Monday morning.

Alissa Boyle, 22, along with another nursing student from Waynesburg University, stopped to help a motorist who crashed on Interstate 79 near the West Virginia border. Boyle and Cami Abernethy, 21, of Sewickly, Pa., jumped nearly 50 feet over the edge of an overpass to avoid being hit by an oncoming tractor-trailer.

The Waynesburg Post of the Pennsylvania State Police said Derek Hartzog, 21, of Washington, Pa., fell asleep while driving south on Interstate 79 in Perry Township just after 6 a.m. His 1996 Jeep Cherokee rolled over several times before coming to rest in the left hand lane of the overpass.

The police report states all three victims were taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, where Boyle and Hartzog were listed in critical condition. Abernethy was listed in stable condition.

The accident occurred just after 6 a.m.

While all comments left were good and true, I think this just goes to show how very important it is to also not be behind the wheel of such a powerful vehicle if your running low on sleep. Driving drowsy is like driving intoxicated. especially on a highway.

This is absolutely terrible what happened to these girls! They are nursing students trying to help someone that was obviously hurt why cant motorists slow down when they see a crash. I think tractor trailors especially need to slow down or get in the other lane. I know sometimes it is hard to do that but then something like this happens. My prayers are with the girls at this difficult time.

Saying prayers...I agree with yeahright; they are both heroes. I hope this story has a happy ending. There is so much bad in the world. It is so good to hear about young, caring individuals. The really sad part is that this wouldn't have made the news if they didn't get hurt. God be with them and their families.
