A nursing student from Salem has been upgraded from critical to fair condition after jumping off an interstate overpass south of Pittsburgh Monday morning.
Alissa Boyle, 22, along with another nursing student from Waynesburg University, stopped to help a motorist who crashed on Interstate 79 near the West Virginia border. Boyle and Cami Abernethy, 21, of Sewickly, Pa., jumped nearly 50 feet over the edge of an overpass to avoid being hit by an oncoming tractor-trailer.
The Waynesburg Post of the Pennsylvania State Police said Derek Hartzog, 21, of Washington, Pa., fell asleep while driving south on Interstate 79 in Perry Township just after 6 a.m. His 1996 Jeep Cherokee rolled over several times before coming to rest in the left hand lane of the overpass.
The police report states all three victims were taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, where Boyle and Hartzog were listed in critical condition. Abernethy was listed in stable condition.
The accident occurred just after 6 a.m.
