State Troopers in Alaska are investigating the death of a teacher, originally from Slippery Rock, Pa.
The body of Candice Berner, 32, was found in a remote area of the Alaskan Peninsula Monday night near the Chignik Lake airstrip.
Reports say Berner was a special education teacher based in Perryville, Alaska, who had just arrived in Chignik this week to work at a school there.
State Troopers notified Berner's next of kin about her death, but initial reports that say that Candice could have been killed in a wolf attack are under speculation by members of the local community.
"The body has been sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy, and hopefully the results of that will help us out with the investigation and determine the cause of death," said Beth Ipsen, state trooper spokesperson. "At this point in time, it is considered a death investigation."
Ipsen said the Chignik Lake area, where the body was found, is remote with a population of roughly 100. It's about 474 miles southwest of Anchorage.
Berner's family still resides in western Pennsylvania but could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
