A tense situation in a Warren neighborhood forced residents from their homes Sunday afternoon.

Warren police called in the Youngstown bomb squad after a military mortar round was found in a home on Union Street. Residents on either side of the home were evacuated and the entire street was blocked off.

The home had been vacant a few weeks after the owner was taken to a nursing home. A neighbor cleaning out the house found the weapon in the attic.

The mortar round is thought to date back to World War II. It was safely removed and residents were able to return to their homes.
