A handicapped man who claimed he was beaten by a Youngstown cop after a car crash last month had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit at the time, said authorities.

Authorities also said Friday they believe Willie Daniel, who said he was beaten by Officer Robert Jolliff, was driving at the time of the crash.

Daniel, who is paralyzed from the waist down, had claimed the truck he was riding in slid off the road and hit a pole in late February. He said his brother was driving and then left for help. A tow truck driver called police saying Daniel asked him not to call and that he thought Daniel had a gun in the vehicle, though none was ever found.

Daniel said when police arrived, Jolliff reached in the car, punched him and threw him in the street. Daniel has maintained he wasn't driving and faces charges of OVI and driving under suspension. City Prosecutor Jay Macejko said Friday he received a report showing Daniel's blood alcohol level registered at .152.

An internal investigation began a few days after the incident but is not yet complete.

However, Chief Jimmy Hughes said earlier this week there is some indication there was some wrongdoing on Jolliff's part during the arrest. Hughes also said he is concerned about an incident where Jolliff collapsed during his shift last week. Jolliff was allegedly meeting with another officer involved in Daniel's case at the time. He is now on sick leave.

To all of you who judge the YPD officers that have complaints and allegations thrown at them DAILY, patrol the East side of Youngstown in the middle of the night in the pitch dark and THEN you will be able to judge accordingly. Where was Willie Daniel's brother? Off to find a phone? Willie Daniel HAD A CELL PHONE PEOPLE ! His brother served time in the penitentary in 1991 for aggravated vehicular assault, not one but THREE counts. So gee, did HE have something to hide? And, why was Willie so quick to go straight to the media instead of going through proper channels of complaint and legal recourse first? Did anyone notice he didn't have a mark or a bruise on his face? Yet another example of "poor me" in the city that will never get ahead with losers like this living here. Do yourself a favor Willie, you are obviously not helpless, you have played wheelchair basketball at the YMCA, you can surely make your way into a bar to get your drink on, save some of your drinking money and BUY SOME CAR INSURANCE so you can drive (yes you)the streets with the financial responsibility we are all required to have, instead of looking for someone else to pay for your clear lack of common sense. The officer is NOT a bigot, he is a good man who did his job and has more bravery than any of you nay sayers who hide behind cruel words and judge. But the police that respond to your emergency (God forbid you ever have one) OH THEY ARE THE BEST, RIGHT? Because they are helping YOU. Walk in another man's shoes before you judge, feel fear before you condemn, feel compassion before you speak and if you are incapable of any of these things, your ignorance is shameful.

If there is one thing I SHOULD be able to rely upon is that the youngstown police department will preform there duties in a professional manner even in our times of trouble and dispare. I commend there efforts in crime and drug control, And have seen many good things. I am confident the Chief will sourt this out and do the next right thing.

So lemmee see; Willie's brother (the alleged driver) wrecks the car, goes for help, returns to see the police 'abusing' Willie, but slinks off in the dark. Drunk Willie (with driver's license suspended) is behind the wheel and is reported to have a gun by the tow truck driver. The cop who removes him from the car is charged with brutality when the fracas escalates while Drunk Willie is being physically removed & subdued. Hmmm... sounds like a bad situation properly handled by the police. Oh, that's right; the officer should have politely extended an invitation to Drunk Willie to exit the vehicle and pleasantly request that Willie show that he was not armed. He should have cheerfully carried Willie to a nearby sofa for further refreshments. Willie does look like a pillar of society (drunk, behind the wheel of a wrecked vehicle, supposedly armed, at 3 AM on Wilson Ave.) and was being most eloquent in his inebriated state; just ask his lawyer Mr. Betras.

What the hell does this guys blood alcohol content have to do with anything? Its very obvious he wasn't driving. Now the bigot that beat him knows the end is near for him, so he tips over at work and says its job related. Nice try slick, see if you get that past the Department of Labor.

Thank GOD the driver didn't kill an innocent bystander. A blatant disregard for the law and human life. Shameful.
