More than a dozen people lined the sidewalks in front of Nemenz IGA in Struthers Friday. They were there to protest pickets.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union has posted what they call an informational picket line in front of the Nemenz store for the past couple of years claiming, in part, that Henry Nemenz has failed to provide his workers adequate benefits.

Friday, supporters of Nemenz made up signs of their own. The group said they have had enough of the union pickets. They said that Nemenz treats his employees well and has done a lot for the community.

"Mr. Nemenz, he provides jobs for our community," said Robert Henricksen, protest organizer. "He's a vital part of the community, and if the union gets their way, there's going to be 120 people out of work."

"I give Henry a lot of credit," said Anita Fraser, president of the Tri-county Tea Party. "He's well-respected in the community, and his employees love him, too. So leave him alone."

The protesters said they could hold additional rallies in the future if the union pickets continue.

tell the union to take a hike! i`m tired os seeing picketers outside these stores. it was with great sadness that i had to watch IGA in Hubbard close because of the picketing. Took many jobs away from our area. Get lost union! YOU are why our country is in the situation its in now!

The real irony in the picketing is that the paid picketers are union paid employees of the same union their paying dues to, too protect their jobs. Their incomes are being supplimented with hours on the line. Why? Because the unionized grocery stores they work for don't have enough hours to give them. Where are all the union jobs saved when Giant Eagle closed the store on Market and Midlothian? How's about all the union jobs saved when they closed the Giant Eagle in Cornersburg? As for the comment about Henry's IGA store not doing good, think again. The store is packed all day long!

I find Nemenez picketing by the Union very comical, but sad. Y-town has lost so many jobs since the Steel Mills closed, and we're still loosing. Has the Unions in this country lost their minds, I think they have. It's funny that we are crying for jobs here in Y-town, yet the Union is trying to close stable businesses that have jobs for people who want to work. Now that's funny, putting people out of a job because of what, because the store is not Unionized. Now explain to me where is the common sense in all that. There is none. So take your pickets, and picket the unions that are trying to coerce the American public, and re-evaluate what you as the Union is doing to the American people. A lesson to be learned: be careful about what the Union tells you, you may end up unemployed, or employers you may end up with people that can't do their job.

I have a question. Could it be that only the stores owned by Nemenz that are not doing well financially are picketed? Once a store starts getting picketed, it gets shut down and pickets are listed as the reason why. Could this be a campaign of misinformation?

How would you like to be in this union and see the money they have wasted picketing henry.Unions have ruined our economy around here.

I'm against Unions. This isn't a communist country. Not every employer can afford to give every single worker benefits and good pay. It's impossible to thrive in a capitalist market under those conditions. So if you want your benefits you are going to have to work harder and watch your buddy lose his job.

You have to ask yourself why has this union only unfairly targeted Nemenz, and not any of the other non union stores in the valley? They won't give you an answer. Why aren't any of the union paid picketers standing in front of any of the Walmarts? Better yet why aren't they in the intercity at the Red and White stores or to the "Arab" markets?

These Pickets tell more about the Union than Mr. Nemenz. They are doing this because their membership is declining. The Employees could become members simply by voting to join. They already have good pay and benefits, good working conditions and a very good boss. Mr Nemenz treats his employees well and takes care of his customers and communities. He is an perfect example of how a good business should be run.
