Local girl scouts spent Tuesday learning about the legal system and they had a very special guide.

Girl scout troop 691 of New Middletown toured the Mahoning County Courthouse. The girls got to watch a plea deal and sentencing with Judge James C. Evans of common pleas court.

Evans, whose two granddaughters took part in the tour, said seeing the law in action is going to be very hard for the girls to forget.

"They'll retain quite a bit of it," Evans said. "Remembering particularly if somebody is here, police are all around or the judge decides that he or she wants to address something harshly, but they'll recall it."

The girls also got to take a private tour of the courtroom and learned exactly what a stenographer does. They also got to go behind the judge's bench to try out the gavel.
