YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) - There are new cameras on I-680 in Youngstown. But these cameras won't send you a speeding ticket.
27 First News viewers noticed the radar sensor cameras hanging on exit signs near the Midlothian Blvd. and Route 711 interchanges and notified the newsroom. The Ohio Department of Transportation installed them recently.Read more: The I-680 speeding-ticket situation explainedRead more: YPD cameras pick up 2,300 speeders in a month on I-680
As ODOT's Brent Kovacs explains, the cameras "take the overall traffic speed on 680 and then relay it to our website ohgo.com to basically allow motorists to check the traffic speed before they would leave on either their computer or smartphone and see if there's any slow downs or hold ups anywhere."
They're not video cameras, but broadband radar sensor cameras to help ODOT monitor traffic flow.
