Coroner: Man pulled from burning Hubbard garage dies

The coroner says James Vint, 45, died when he arrived at the hospital despite efforts to revive him on the way there

HUBBARD, Ohio (WKBN) - A man pulled from a burning garage in Hubbard Wednesday afternoon has died, according to the Mercer County coroner.

The fire happened around 2 p.m. at the site where a fire happened last week, destroying the Vint family's home on Simler Street and killing several pets.

Investigators at the scene said 45-year-old James Vint was in critical condition when he was taken to Sharon Regional Medical Center. The coroner says Vint died just before 3 p.m. when he arrived at the hospital despite efforts to revive him on the way there.

"It's my understand that his wife dropped him off here to go through all the clothes that they received from the clothing donation from the fire at the house a week or so ago," Liberty Fire Chief Gus Birch said. "That's what we think he was here for."

The Brookfield and Liberty fire departments were on the scene.

Liberty Fire Chief Gus Birch said there was a portable generator in the garage, but it is unknown whether the generator was in use.

"We had heavy smoke coming from the garage," he said. "The police department was here. They heard the individual screaming for help. They tried to make entry, but the fire was too intense."

The State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate the cause of the fire. They're still investigating what caused the fire to the home last week.

"It's just amazing what's happened in the last three or four days," family member John Demetruk said. "It's terrible, for all of us."

First responders say these two fires will be hard to shake.

"Some of them struggled, you know, when we found him to get him out -- and they gotta live with that," Birch said. "We see a lot of things that people normally don't see and nobody should really see, but that's part of the job."
