The most dramatic difference between private schools and public schools is the cost, and the quality of education. Aside from taxes, public schools are free, while private school tuition can be extremely expensive. Education, on the other hand, is almost always vastly superior at private schools.Class sizes are smaller, and equipment tends to be better. Private institutions also focus more on basics like English, math, history, and science, without frivolous electives. In addition, they offer more in the way of art, music, philosophy, and foreign language. Another major difference is the issue of discipline. Problems like gangs, fighting, drugs and alcohol are more common in public schools, simply because private schools refuse to admit disruptive children, or expel them, whereas the public system is forced to serve everyone. However, private schools have their own drawbacks. The cost of tuition, uniforms, book fees and transportation can be huge. Attending the school could hurt your child's friendships with neighborhood kids. They'll also have to study much harder, and spend more hours on homework. Before you make a choice, weigh all the factors carefully, and check out the quality of education available at public schools in your area.
