The United States Geological Survey has replotted the epicenter of the magnitude 4.0 earthquake that hit the Youngstown-Girard area Saturday just after 3 p.m.

Initial reports had the epicenter plotted in McDonald, the most recent measurements now have the quake centered just off Division Street, less than one tenth of a mile from the D & L brine injection well on Ohio Works Drive.

On Friday, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources ordered the well shut down until further testing could be done to determine if the well could be causing the quakes.

Saturday's quake is the eleventh to hit the immediate area since March. Previous to March there had never been a locally originated earthquake in the Youngstown area. The well went online just a short time before the first quake occurred on March 17th.

Reports were widespread from as far away as Canada and West Virginia of residents feeling the quake. Locally police phone lines as well as lines into our newsroom were jammed with reports from jolted citizens.

"I'm pro business, but I don't know about this," said Thomas Borocz after inspecting new cracks in the walls of his Girard business.

Cosmo Signoriello of Girard used to live in California where earthquakes are common. "We felt the ones that were in the area previously, and this is the most powerful yet." He said his wife put a quick estimate based on her west coast experience at magnitude 4.5.

In addition to cracks in drywall in Girard, bricks fell from a chimney in McDonald. Posters to the station's Facebook pages have submitted many pictures of cracked cement block walls, cracks in drywall, and reported slanting floors. No injuries have been reported.

its also not far from where V&M is or was pounding a couple hundred big metal poles a hundred or so feet into the ground.. but that cant be it, its got to be the wells..

for instance, i have yet to see, George Bush,John Bohner, or Rep Jhonson come here and make a speech about how, V&M, is gonna supply all the tubing for the drilling projects for the Marcellus shale region.. And drilling in this region will bring much needed jobs, and commotities to the area, and this country.. I have seen Ted Strickland, Obama, Joe bit me, and even Tim Ryan come out and make Several speeches on what a great thing this could be for our area. And get federal funding's for all of this, with the stimulus, and recovery act funds.

Truth be known - How can anyone,in their wildest dreams, believe that drilling 1000 feet into the earth and dumping thousands of gallons a day of brine into that hole can be bad for you? The Republicans wouldn't mislead us,they wouldn't put us in harms way. I find it quite humorous that you blame republicans, when you have Obama and his morons coming here promoting well drilling, expanding V&M Star, to supply tubing, for drilling in the area, and giving out federal dollars, like candy, to all the people in the logistical chain, when it comes to drilling... but keep blaming the republicans..I think you need to look on the other side of the isle...

I have E-mailed Govenor Kasich and our federal and state representetives toward state and federal funding to upgrade our county infrastructure and building codes. The magnitude of this earthquake should warrant an inspection of our county briges and public buildings for possible damage. The proper prevention of fire should be addressed in the building codes in our schools and public buildings quickly. Our area leaders should request a external federal agency such as the USGS or Dept of Army Engineers to review the potential cause of these tremors and earthquakes. Ohio should also examine the chemicals and indutrial solvents, anti-freezing compounds and glycol compounds found in the brine. Material Safety Data Sheets are not available, and this fluids is being treated in Warren and being discharged back into the water supply. This company is also planning to inject brine in Cambell and several other Mahoning County sites. Licensure of these injection wells should account for geologic formation, potential seismic activity and public endangerment. Continued and future activity could also alter the way coal, limestone and surface mining are conducted in this region. Unfortunately, we now live in an earthquake zone. And we must adapt our construction and safety standards to ensure that the public is protected during the tremors. Thank you, take care, be safe...and Happy New Years

Many homes and buildings do not have their water heaters, stoves and gas furnaces strapped down and secured, as to prevent movement or tipping over. This needs to be addressed in Ohio and Mahoning County now. The abandoned mine shafts under peoples homes and property in Mahoning County also pose a threat of collapse now. The antiquated gas and water lines also need updated before an incident occurs similar to San Bernidino California. The brine is not permited to be treated or injected in Pennsylvania. But the Ohio EPA licenses an injection well in Youngstown and water treatment site Warren? Please email and write to your state and federal representatives. And please secure your water heaters, and stoves as to prevent potential fires and damage during these earthquakes.

Again - fracking is NOT the same as brine injection. They are two separate and distinctively different processes for two different objectives. Please stop confusing yourself and the issues.

@frackingisbad, I don't endorse fracking or brine injection. Quite the contrary, I endorse standard drilling and offshore drilling and certainly any safe means of attaining carbon based energy sources. I agree new sources for energy should continue to be studied but not at the expense of energy sources and technology that have been used and proven safe for over a hundred years. Political barriers and environmental obstacles placed on conventional means of extracting oil and gas have hurt the economy for all. I like you agree that fracking is indeed dangerous. Kasich should have extended the ban area even larger. (please see earlier comment where I stated "(and they may very well be). Oh and as for damage to my home before solar panels or windmills could be installed, your comments seem ridiculous. Green technologies have an efficiency of maybe 1 to 3% output for what this country uses in a given year (probably lower than that) and too great an expense for the average to even above average income earner to afford. The future may be good for alternate energy sources but today even the most die-hard progressives should realize we have to continue using and maybe even funding research for safer and cleaner use of coal, oil, and natural gas.

Sorry to dissapoint you FRACK - I am one of the unemployed in the Valley for 2 years now - I do not receive any monies from Fracking, Government or State funded - remember to think before you assume - there are some of us out here who look at the long term not the short term of every issue - We for one are investing in Wind Power but WAIT - not american made due to our great Politicians who make all of the decisions based again on $$$$ that the companies are better off sending this also overseas - So sorry that my Family comes from Coal Miners and that is one of the most used resources in American Soil for your use of the Electric that you use to discourage hoping that only your voice will be taken to Heart - Sorry last I knew - America was still free and I would rather support Fracking than support closeminded people that do not do their homework -
