Tents and crates are becoming a familiar scene on Federal Plaza.

Three years ago, the Downtown Farmers Market set up shop with a menu not normally associated with the heart of the city.

Every Tuesday, visitors can peruse the fresh produce or tempt their taste buds with homemade baked goods.

Josephine Williams sells her items downtown.

"I have baked goods, that's my talent," said Williams. "I have sweet potato pies. I have oatmeal raisin cookies, 7-Up cake and apple nut pound cake."

Every Tuesday through October, vendors will come from all over the Valley and even western Pennsylvania. Organizers hope to bring their products to people who may not have easy access to them.

"There are a variety of high rise elderly apartments and we are able to accept the Ohio direction card, which is a form of food stamp program," said Jim Converce, market manager. "So that makes it possible for a lot of people who couldn't otherwise buy very much to become customers also."

And over the years, the farmers market gained some loyal shoppers.

Customer Annette El-Hayek walks down from YSU for the produce.

"I come down whenever I can," she said. "If the weather is good, I walk down during my lunch break and buy some produce. I just called my colleagues up to let them know its back up and running again."

Organizers expect business to pick up with the addition of the new call center. They typically draw a few hundred customers each week.

I am a "helper" at a local farmers' market in Plymouth, Indiana. We are open there from 7:30 am to 11:30 am every Saturday from May to October. It is a spectacular way to spend Saturday mornings, no matter which side of the stand you are on.....a seller or a buyer. The Mayor of Plymouth is almost always there ! The vendors all have their "specialties" and for many of them, if you don't get there early THEY RUN OUT ! If you just want to "people watch" there is not much more of a better place than an outdoor farmers' market....the youngest of the young are getting their training from their parents.....the teens and pre-teens bring their finest summer wear to show off.....the seniors bring their stories to share with you or their friends and relatives....yes, it can be just a big social event. The "non-profits" and churches get to come to our farmers market on a rotating basis....usually one or two a week, and they bring their own flair....and usually homemake BAKED GOODS for sale ! Being near big Amish communities, Plymouth gets some Amish farmers to bring their foods and baked goods. And not-to-rush-the-season, but we have GREAT Apple Cider every fall thanks to a farmer in Mentone ! So if you are coming to South Bend for a football game in the fall, stop by the Plymouth Farmers' Market on Garro Street in downtown Plymouth Indiana and see what the fun can be all about BEFORE kickoff !
