The Youngstown CityScape organization has made it its goal to beautify downtown Youngstown and surrounding areas.
On Tuesday, the organization honored local individuals for helping them achieve that goal at the fifth annual Youngstown CityScape Beautification Awards at Fellows Riverside Gardens.
Nearly two dozen awards were given out, ranging from business and institutions to individual homeowners and neighborhood groups.
Carol Franklin and Clark Babb represent The Clark Bar on Mahoning Avenue and were among this year's first-time recipients. They said the award was unexpected.
"I was just really suprised that someone would take notice that we try to make the neighborhood look really nice and put a lot of nice flowers out there. And like I said, it's a bar, but that doesn't mean it can't look nice," they said after receiving the award.
Recipients each received a sign they can display in their yard or garden and an award certificate. The CityScape group hopes more people will get involved, saying beautification promotes growth and can benefit the economy.
