A wind turbine came crashing down near Western Reserve High School in Berlin Center on Sunday.

The piece of the turbine that fell was one of three installed at the school back in 2009.  The company that makes the equipment is out of Scotland, they work with an Indiana company.

The turbines supply about 40-percent of the school's electricity.

No official word on what caused the turbine to fall.  However, officials say it may have been the result of fatigued bolts.

A crew out of North Jackson climbed the other two towers to make sure there were no structural problems with either of them.

The area's been taped off. No one was hurt.

Thanks a lot mr loveland, you could have killed someone in the comunity.

RE: Citizen1 - There is no such thing as a wind turbine that is a nice investment. There are no available wind turbines that produce enough reliable electricity to come even close to paying for themselves, even when they are working properly. The ONLY reason anyone buys these things is that the Federal and State Governments are providing grants to pay for them, and the money is invariably completely lost. Also, because they need to be continually backed up by traditional generation, and they cause the back up generation to be operated in a less than effifcient manner to balance supply load; any claims that wind turbine use results in reduction of pollution are highly suspect.

I am not saying more of *these* turbines, but quality ones that will be a nice investment for the school and the community. It is my personal belief that communities should take charge and invest in renewable energy. The less dependent we are on the state and federal governments and giant corporations, the more freedom we'll have.

We paid $360,000 for these wind turbines in 2009. It was known at the time that the 3 turbines combined would not produce even as much as $260,000 worth of electricity in their entire life span. Since installation they have been out-of-service more than they have been in service. I would like a report detailing EXACTLY how much electricity (in KWh) they have produced since they were installed. Since we spent $360,000 for them, the answer had better not be "We don't know."

40% of the school's electric? actually closer to 10%. that is the same turbine that caused the shut down last year when all three were sent back for warranty repair. they were down for 6 months then and they're still fatigued? total waste of our federal tax dollars just like the school is a waste of state money.
