A car flips upside down into Westville Lake; the driver trapped.  It was quick thinking by two bystanders that saved the driver's life.

It was around 3:30 Friday morning at quiet Westville Lake, just off of Case Road, that campers, Sharon Rowley and Jerry Lanning, heard a loud crash.  A car hit a tree and spun into Westville Lake.  "I heard the bang.  I come up try and find it.  I saw a car in the water and I jumped into the water and got one door off.  I went to the other side and I could see his leg," said Jerry Lanning.

The car, upside down, the driver's legs trapped, wedged in between the car seats.  The two worked to keep the man from drowning.  "I held his hand and kept him alert.  My father was up by his head and talking to him, making sure his head didn't go under the water until help came," explains Sharon Rowley.

Help finally did arrive.  Firefighters got the man out of the car and into a waiting ambulance.  He was taken to the hospital with only minor injuries.

North Georgetown Assistant Fire Chief Doug Jarvis says, if not for Sharon and Jerry this accident could have been a lot worse.  "He's very lucky.  This road is not traveled much at night.  He's lucky somebody saw it or heard it.  If not, he wouldn't have lasted long in the water."

As for Sharon and Jerry, what was supposed to be a nice camping trip in the woods this Memorial Day weekend will forever leave a lasting impression in their mind.

No word on what caused the driver to crash.  The State Highway Patrol is investigating.
