Was this the coldest July ever in Youngstown?
After a bone-chilling winter, a sizzling summer was all but expected in Youngstown. It’s only fair, right? But instead, the swimsuits, shorts, and sandals never really replaced the jeans and long sleeve shirts. In fact, despite its position in the dead of summer, July 2009 remained relatively cool. What happened to the heat? With chillier temperatures than normal, the monthly temperatures might even be brisk enough to make Christmas in July a reality (Jack Frost and Frosty the Snowman for neighbors, anyone?). Even with an obvious exaggeration, was this the coldest July ever recorded? Take a look at the ten coldest and ten hottest Julys on record.
Shivering Spells?
July isn’t typically known as a cool month by any stretch of the imagination; however, the Valley does have a history of some pretty cool Julys. Although this past month in Youngstown won’t break any records, it finishes as second coldest July ever recorded (behind July 2000), ties a record low of 49 degrees on July 14 (originally set in 2007), and ranks among the top coldest Julys. As August’s dog days of summer approaches, residents in the Valley will continue to hope that summer finally arrives with the usual rising temperatures. If not, there’s always winter.

Scorching SummersJuly tends to be extremely hot in the Valley; in fact, so torrid that the month holds the all-time record for hottest average temperature in Youngstown. On July 10, 1936, temperatures soared to 103 degrees at the airport and this same month was responsible for one of the greatest heat waves in Youngstown’s history! Although it doesn’t hold the record for hottest temperature in a single day, July 1934 currently maintains the all-time record for hottest average temperature throughout the month of July. Causing extreme fatigue and a slew of heat related deaths over the years, July temperatures tend to boil in the Valley.
