It's not unusual to find squirrels, doing what they like to do best, in Perkins Park in the summer.
And through his years as a detective in Warren, Wayne Mackey has run into quite a few squirrelly situations, but that did not prepare him for what happened a few weeks ago, when he was interviewing a witness on a recent murder case. "No, I was not prepared to see a woodland creature in the interview room," said Detective Wayne Mackey.
The woman was in the Warren City police interview room answering questions for several minutes. During one point in the conversation, she bends over, and oops, out comes what Mackey says is a baby squirrel. It's enough to make a squirrel blush, but the woman does not seem to be phased, and just gently puts the small creature back inside her shirt and continues talking to the detective.
When this happened right in front of Detective Mackey, he was pretty much at a loss for words and said, "Ah, nothing. I kept right on talking to her and listening to her," Mackey said. "I didn't acknowledge it at all. I really didn't know what to say."
Mackey says he is not sure if the squirrel is the woman's pet and says he has no idea why she even decided to bring it in with her to during the interview.
"The squirrel seemed quite happy," Mackey said.
The woman and her squirrel are not expected to be called to testify during the trial.
