Warren Mayor Mike O'Brien said, due to the city's financial problems, he will be taking a 2-percent wage cut this year.

O'Brien said since he is an elected official he can't change his salary during his term, so in order to take the pay cut, he wrote the city a check for $1,700, which is the same as a 2-percent cut.

He has also agreed to take part in the same health care plan as other city employees.

"Lead by example, and I think by doing, it is better for the employees and it is better for the entire community," O'Brien said.

The mayor said Safety-Service Director Doug Franklin will also be taking a 2-percent pay cut and has agreed to take part in the employee health care plan.

Several city unions have agreed to the same cuts in light of the city's budgetary issues.
