As city police continue to investigate Warren's 8th homicide of the year and the more than 20 aggravated robberies that happened in the past few months, a group of citizens have decided to team up with a Youngstown organization for a Holy Ground Initiative.
"This is not a reaction to what just happened, but obviously what just happened calls more attention to the fact that we need to be more diligent and not be afraid to report what is going on," said Councilman Dan Crouse.
The Southwest Neighborhood Association and ACTION of Youngstown, along with local clergy, are planning to have the event at 5:30 next Tuesday evening on the corner of Fourth and Highland.
"What we want to do is pull everyone together and bring unity on the southwest side, get residents out of their home and let them know they are not alone," said Tina Milner, who is helping to organize the event.
Organizers spent most of Monday morning notifying neighbors about the event. They say the purpose of the initiative is to help identify troubled areas, increase public awareness and support for the southwest side.
"I have been here for over 40 years, and I am not afraid to live here. I am proud to be here," said Eleanor Williamson.
Organizers say they are hoping hundreds will attend.
