Jim Tressel will be coaching students once again but this time it won't be on the field.

On Thursday, University of Akron President Dr. Luis Proenza appointed Tressel to be the vice president of strategic engagement.

Tressel will help connect with alumni and friends as well as identify and recommend support strategies to help create a better experience for students.

"I think that's awesome. I love Jim Tressel, Ohio State, and that's fantastic," said senior Brittany Devor.

"With his history in football and sports, I think Akron needs that right about now," said junior Zachary Skillern.

On Thursday morning, he met with a group of students to begin listening to what they want.

"The first thing I'm going to do is listen and learn and become a part of the team. I'm not the offensive coordinator or the defensive coordinator. I'm just a part of the team," Tressel said.

He said in the next few weeks will focus on building relationships.

"I want to do all that I can possibly do to build relationships with our alumni, with our friends, with future students, with our school systems, with our business partners, with everyone we possibly can in the community," Tressel said.

The former Ohio State University coach was forced to resign last year in the midst of scandal. He will not be a part of the athletic department and because of NCAA sanctions, he can't have day to day interaction with the football team.

Tressel's new position is part of a new strategy by the University of Akron called Vision 20/20: The New Gold Standard of University Performance. The plan focuses on preparing students for college and helping to direct them once they're there.

Tressel said the vision he and Dr. Proenza has is regional, which will keep him connected to Youngstown.

"Dr. Proenza talks often about the relationship he had with Dr. Sweet, who just retired, and now Cynthia Anderson over at Youngstown State so we're a partnership type group and I look forward to being able to help that," Tressel said.

Tressel's base salary is $200,000.

tressel has no shame. he should be embarassed! this job was created for him? wait. what? akron students get ready for a tuition hike. he's banned from coaching in college for five years so he accepts this invented position? from three million a year to two hundred thousand? tressel was on his way to becoming the next woody hayes at osu. he blew it. he disgraced himself and one of the greatest universities in the country. does akron really want to win that bad?

Go Coach Tress! I have always been a huge fan of yours and always will be. You are one of the few out there who rates academic success over athletic success and I applaud you for that. This is the perfect job for you! Good luck! It's great to have you back in Northeast Ohio!

Well I guess Akron U does not care who they hire. $200,000 plus for a cheat, and liar to now deal with students directly. All this will do is hike the tuition for the poor students at Akron. There are a lot of good people out there with exoerience who could handle this "created " job. So Akron gives it to a guy who has been disgraced and has NO experienceto do such a job. So who at Akron got paid off to hire Tressel?

I WILL SAY THIS ONE MORE TIME TO ALL OF YOU DISCIPLES OF THE ELECTRONIC SOCIAL MEDIA. I CAPITALIZE FOR ONE REASON, THE FOLKS PARTICIPATING IN WR TTEN DISCUSSION FORMATS LIKE THIS ONE THAT SOMETIMES HAVE LESS THAN OPTIMAL EYESIGHT. I WAS TOLD BY A NOW DEPARTED FRIEND, THAT IT WAS MUCH EASIER FOR HER TO READ BIGGER LETTERS.I THOUGHT THE PURPOSE OF THIS AND OTHER WEBSITES OF THIS GENRE WAS TO EXPRESS AND SHARE OPINIONS IN A SOCIAL MANNER. I OFTEN TIMES FIND PEOPLE THAT ARE UPSET WITH THE PROCEDURE OF MY COMMUNICATIONS ARE SUBCONSCIOUSLY EXPRESSING A DISLIKE WITH MY OPINION. IN CONCLUSION THEY CANNOT MAKE A LEGITIMATE REBUTTAL OR CANNOT FATHOM WHAT THE PURPOSE OF SHARING IDEAS IS ALL ABOUT. GET A LIFE!

TRESSEL HAS MADE MILLIONS WHILE AT OHIO STATE. HE DOESN'T NEED THE MONEY. SO HERE IS A NOVEL IDEA, WHY NOT RETIRE AND VOLUNTEER AS A STUDENT MOTIVATOR IN THE YOUNGSTOWN CITY SCHOOLS.THE HIRING AT AKRON HAS PUT A DIFFERENT TWIST ON DOUBLE DIPPING. THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON CLAIMS THAT IT IS AN INCUBATOR FOR NEW IDEAS AND EMERGING ENTEPENEUR HOT BED, SO WHAT COULD A TARNISHED COACH THAT NEVER REALLY TAUGHT FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME HAVE TO OFFER. ANOTHER EXTRA 6 FIGURE PAYCHECK DRAINING THE SYSTEM. NEXT YEAR THE TUITION FOR THE STUDENTS WILL GO UP TO SUPPORT THESE TYPES. COULD YOU IMAGINE HOW MANY HIDDEN JOBS ARE OUT THERE IN THE SO CALLED PUBLIC SERVANT SECTOR THAT ARE JUST LIKE THIS ONE. PROVENZALE OUGHT TO BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF. TRESSEL SHOULD JUST FADE AWAY AND ENJOY HIS EARLY RETIREMENT.

Although Tressel's shine has been tarnished he still has leadership qualities that can be put to good use. Akron has likely provided the necessary environment to keep Tressel on the right path this time. No one would hire him without covering their own butts. That "insurance" is something WKBN could uncover instead of telling us about Tracy Morgan or his mother.

what goes around comes around. maybe he'll wind up back at ysu. he won't be under such a large microscope and maybe he'll be able to keep cheating and get away with it.
