The North American International Auto Show kicked off this weekend.  And fresh off of receiving the government bridge loan, the big three US automakers scaled back their displays.

But General Motors still dazzled onlookers as they showed off their new fuel efficient vehicles, including the Volt and the newly introduced Cadillac Converj.

"That remains on schedule as the announcement before, and as we showed we are very enthusiastic about the car and want to get it to the market place as soon as we can," says GM CEO, Rick Wagoner.

Wagoner also told me GM plans to sell versions of the Cruze is other parts of the world this year.

"We are investing 371 million dollars into Lordstown and also putting in a flexible body shop that will allow other models to be built there if and when the market requires," says Gary Cowger.

A foam model of the Cruze was revealed in Lordstown in August, but Sunday was the first time the car debuted in North America.

"To see it moving like that yes indeed it does work.  It does run well and it is going to be a great fuel efficient vehicle built by the great people of Lordstown.  It will be a real asset for the Mahoning Valley and the state of Ohio," says Tom Mock.

The Cruze is slated to begin production in Lordstown in 2010.

While the highlights of the show focus on the hybird cars, officials did say how important the cruze is to general motors future.
