SHARON, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania school board will let students wear jeans and some colors previously forbidden under a dress code as a reward for improved scores on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment exams.
The Sharon High School Class of 2011 is was the first group of 11th graders to make "adequate yearly progress" on the achievement tests since the No Child Left Behind Act took effect in 2002.
School Superintendent John Sarandrea says this year's seniors performed well when they took the tests last year, as juniors. The school board voted 8-1 on Monday to relax the dress code for those seniors who may now wear jeans and tops in all colors except red or solid white.
Jeans and certain colored tops had previously been prohibited under the dress code.
