Now it's an empty lot, but soon a new housing complex will sit on Washington Avenue.

Donald Emerson, Director of the Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority, says, "A good three years ago we started applying to HUD for federal dollars for this project.  We were rejected the first two times and received funding the third time."

In all, the Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority received seven million dollars to pay for Girard Manor, which will house low to moderate income seniors.

The city's mayor says that group's been in need of more options for the last ten years.  Mayor Jim Melfi says, "Obviously, there's benefits of being able to satisfy seniors needs.
That's our number one goal and also you have to look that you're bringing a seven million dollar investment to our community."

The three story facility will have 40 units, larger than the normal section 202 housing, as well as plenty of parking for the residents.

It's also centrally located with the library across the street and the business district just a block away.

Emerson says, "We're gonna try to make this a home for folks and I don't think we'll have any problems filling it up once it's completed."

Construction will begin next week with a scheduled move in date for the beginning of 2010.
