There was a special delivery to Reilly Elementary in Salem on Friday.

It took a flatbed truck and a police escort for their super-sized lunch to arrive safely.

"I was challenged last year by a group of kids here at this school to come up with something big," said Salem City Schools chef J.R. Straley.

And this is what he came up with: Two 25-foot subs, just in time for Super Bowl weekend.

It took the food service staff at Salem only 20 minutes to construct the sandwiches.

"There is approximately 35 pounds of lunch meat on there, 360 slices of cheese, one case of shredded lettuce, one 20-pound case of tomatoes, and about a 5-gallon bucket of sliced pickles," Straley said.

But add this all up, and Chef Straley needed a strong offense to bring this Super Bowl delicacy down the field. So he recruited a team of eight men, Salem police officers, firefighters and school officials.

They followed the play book and strategically maneuvered the subs through the halls, right to the cafeteria.

"Still it was pretty hair raising to follow it and watch it jockey around there a few times," said Straley.

It managed to cross the goal line in one piece, only to be cut up and shared with the 215 fans in the 3rd and 4th grades.

"Very excited to give the students here at Reilly a lunch they won't forget for quite sometime," said Straley.
