Whether it is picking up trash in Wick Park, or picking up a paintbrush in Howland, many people are taking advantage of the sunny skies to clean up their community and get a jump on Earth Day.

Mark Hoelzel with the group Resettle Youngstown tells us, "Earth Day is also about people, and people being active in their communities, and actively participating with fixing things up themselves.  It's not just about appreciating the earth and celebrating the earth, but it's about working towards making the earth better."

About 35 volunteers worked their way through Wick Park and the surrounding neighborhood, trying to clean up what others have left behind.

Jim Converse is also with Resettle Youngstown.  "Today is mainly just picking up trash and garbage.  We, unfortunately, have people that feel that anywhere is their waste basket.  We hope to help change that mentality, and hopefully, having it look clean to start with is one way to encourage people to keep it clean, and keep it nicer than it has been."

Cleaning up is also the idea in Howland.  The Tiger Town Kids Area in Howland Park has weathered over the years, and was struck by vandals last year.  About 20 Howland High School National Honor Society Students grabbed paint brushes to help give it a fresh look.

Jonathan Raghaeb, with Howland High School's National Honor Society tells us, "One of the things for National Honor Society is character and service and scholarship.  All of those things are embodied by helping out the community, so we figured we would give back to the community that gives so much to us by helping out here in Tiger Town."

Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22.
