A group of about 25 supporters of President Barack Obama gathered at a Youngstown restaurant Wednesday with one thing in mind.
"We're celebrating one year, after the election of Barack Obama," said Ann Kurz of Canfield.
She is part of Organizing for America. Prior to Obama's historic victory one year ago, that group did much of the leg work to get him elected. But now they are taking on other roles.
"During the election the President often spoke of grass roots people coming together for change," said group member Jerome Parm. "This is the organization that's working at the local level all across the country to do that."
Community service has become a goal for the group. Ann Kurz of Canfield has been helping with something as simple as collecting clean sheets.
"We collected clean sheets and pillow cases for alzheimer's patients," said Kurz. "A little lady came to our house and said she was looking for sheets and pillow cases at garage sales."
So far she has been pretty successful and has collected dozens of sets for Alzheimer patients.
Lillie Rodgers, of Youngstown, has put her efforts into helping the youth of the Valley.
"Fourteen and fifteen years old, learning a trade is a good thing," said Rodgers. "We as a people have to come up with that. It's all right to teach a child how to paint. It's all right to teach a child how to lay carpet. We have to create things for our children."
Whether it be food drives or making phone calls to people about health care. One year later, Organizing for America is still going strong.
