Officials in Ohio have drastically lowered the legal weight limit on a historic covered bridge that was damaged by a delivery truck.

Trumbull County Commissioners hope the new 3-ton limit, down from 12-tons, will keep other trucks off the Newton Falls Covered Bridge, built in 1831 in an area 42 miles southeast of Cleveland. The covered span is Ohio's second oldest.

Spokesman David Rouan with the Trumbull County Engineer's Office says trusses and beams were damaged in July by a doughnut shop's truck that was too high to go through the bridge. Rouen says $57,000 in repair work, paid for through insurance, will keep the bridge closed through part of January.  The driver pleaded no contest to a minor misdemeanor and paid more than $200 in fines and court costs.
