The Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is in the market for a new name and your input would be appreciated.

The non-profit organization YNGAir Partners is conducting a survey to get the public's feedback on a possible name change for the airport.

The airport was one of 23 nationally that lost funding in 2003 to subsidize air-traffic and it still suffers the after-effects of this when attracting airlines.

Since 2009 airports of similar size have found a boost in passenger traffic since changing their name to attract a more regional image.

The survey beings on Sunday.  Check it out by clicking here.

The results will be released in January.

Rural, YNG lost the EAS funding due to the 70 mile rule which was passed in 2003. No airport within 70 miles of a hub could receive EAS funding. YNG is within 70 miles of PIT. That is the reason we lost that funding. If you want my personal opinion of that program, and this is me speaking for myself here, I do not believe it is worth it; however the politicians will always find a way to protect it so they can get re-elected.

TMOHNSTER- The airport is being approached by airlines to fly out of YNG. It is marketing itself because of the ammenities such as lower landing fees, maintenance facilities, ground operations, improved ticketing and baggage areas, lower security check times, easy parking and not to mention proximity. Allegiant touts YNG all the time as one of their best markets. If we can get an edge and market the airport better, everyone will benefit.

It is my good buddy Rural Neighbor yet again! How have you been man??? Anyways signage upgrades, as mentioned in the Vindicator this past week, were part of the $3.5 million bond that is set to go out the first week of December. Name change or not, the signage upgrades will be covered with that bond. Secondly, what funding did we lose that you are talking about? YNG receives $1,000,000 / year if we have 10,000 enplanements out of the airport. As of October 31, 2011: YNG had 30,506 enplanements and a total of 58,379 total passengers to fly through the airport... The highest number since 1999! The Allegiant flights continue to do quite well as well. December 8th is our next meeting. Hope to see you there.

When the airport changed their name from Youngstown Municipal Airport to the one it currently has decades ago, passenger traffic did increase and flights were added. Airline business has changed. They are flying more regional routes now and we must compete. Airlines and consultants have told us a more regional name would help in marketing the airport. Why do you think other airports of YNG size are renaming themselves to fit their region. As far as how YNG is doing, YNG is the 3rd highest in enplanements for Allegiant and our percentage of passengers on each flight is always around 94% full. It is why they are looking to increase flights and destinations. In 2006 the State of Ohio did an economic impact study of airports in Ohio. YNG produced $257 million and that was 3 months BEFORE Allegiant started flying out of YNG. Oh, and before you say the airbase played a part in that, Rickenbacker in Columbus had $287M and CAK was at $356M. Seeing your screen name I wonder if you perhaps may be a fan of CAK and maybe afraid of what YNG is accomplishing.

Even marketing their services better won't fix anything. The airline business has changed. They are offering less choices, and only fly to the most dense markets. Pittsburgh was once a fortress hub. It's now a ghost town that barely has a handful of flights. Cleveland will be the same way after the merger is complete. Airlines cancel profitable routes to utilize aircraft on even more profitable routes. This entire region doesn't have the population density to justify new flights to any airport between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. I don't even think the shale drillers will help us out in this matter. Accept the airport for what it is. A nice military base with a semi regular charter service.

I don't think the name is the problem here. Market your service better. Think about it!

Changing its name from Youngstown Municipal Airport didn't bring in anymore passengers. How will changing it again be any different? A name change isn't free. They already lost funding for only having three flights a week. Where will the money come from for all of the signs, and legal work? This is another pipe dream.
