When the Oscars are handed out Sunday, one of the 24 categories will include a true Ohio story. "The Last Truck: Closing of a GM plant" is nominated for best short documentary.

Among the crew on the project, Mooney graduate Ben Garchar. He worked as an editor and camera operator, at times drawing on his knowledge of the Lordstown plant and its struggles.

"It's a very similar situation, but in Dayton it ended with the plant closing," said Garchar.

The 40 minute documentary spans 6 months, from when GM announced the plant was closing to its final day. The 1,000 workers who lost their jobs tell the story. Many share anger and sorrow, as they lost not only their jobs, but people they had worked with for years who'd become like family.

Garchar graduated after the project was finished and the 24-year-old is starting his own film career. This is an early shot at fame should the documentary win.

"It's a very strong field," he said. "If we do win, that's great."
