For decades, the land along the Mahoning River boasted 30-mills and factories -- depending on the waterway for the steel-making process.
Now, communities along the River are looking for some re-vitalization.
The mayors of nine cities along the river -- including Youngstown and Warren -- are teaming up to apply for money from the second round of funding from President Obama's economic stimulus program for neighborhood stabilization.
While the communities have put forward more than 30-million dollars in projects -- organizers need to determine which can actually be accomplished to qualify for funding.
Youngstown Community Development Adm. Director Bill D'Avignon says the application process will be competitive, saying, "you have to make sure that not only you have identified what the needs are, but you have the capacity to carry it out."
The River Coalition will be trying to grab a share of nearly two-billion dollars that will be available.
Organizers need to have their application proposal submitted by mid-July.
Grants would be awarded this fall -- with money being available early next year.
