Karen Perry of Youngstown is fighting cancer. She's been through chemo and most recently, after her doctor discovered the cancer spread to her brain, she went through radiation.
And like the 10 million Americans living with a form of the disease, she has plenty on her plate both emotionally and physically. Karen says, "Because I've lost a lot of weight from it, I don't like to wear my wig."
But she's taking steps to feel better about herself, and so are other women, all battling cancer and all attending this month's Look Good Feel Better class.
Karen Martini, a volunteer with the program, says "We just come and put our time in with these ladies and try to have some fun, and I think we learn from each other." They also support each other through the program, which started back in 1989.
Over the years, the program has reached every state in the country, and now once a month here in the Valley, cosmetologists like Karen Martini of Hubbard volunteer to teach makeup classes to women living with Cancer. Karen says, "When you go through treatments you, there are some things you want to maybe not do that you've been used to doing."
The women not only receive beauty tips, but also free products from some of the top selling cosmetic companies around the country.
The program is about more than just makeup. Its main goal is to create confidence and strength during very difficult and unfamiliar times. Karen Perry says, "I mean, I just have to be positive about it, because this is the hand I've been dealt."
