Jackson Township police and fire departments are hoping to spread the word to local children about what they do to keep you safe.
"We just want the public to be as safe as possible. Especially against crimes against themselves so they don't become victims in their own neighborhoods," Jackson Twp. police patrolman Steven Schneider said.
Schneider says by just doing a few simple, everyday things, you can make your home safer.
"Actually you'd be surprised. We just want to make known that a lot of people, especialy in these rural areas don't lock their doors at night or their windows. And times have changed in this area and throughout every community," he said.
Kids were able to spray a fire hose to feel the power behind the water and get in a police cruiser to see how it works. The fire chief says the most common fires he sees are kitchen fires. He says it's easy for a kitchen fire to spread from the stove to a wall and get out of hand quickly.
"The fire starts going up the wall. Fire will spread. It will double in size every minute," Fire Chief Wayne McDougal said.
This is the first year Jackson Township decided to do this. They say it's important children and even parents understand easy ways to stay safe, so they don't become a victim. Police say criminals usually pick easy targets for their prey. They hope the Safety Awareness Day taught the children simple things to protect themselves from becoming that easy target.
