Boardman police were put on alert Friday afternoon following an internet rumor involving the Southern Park Mall.

It all started with postings of a big fight at the mall scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Then rumors circulated that the mall was on lockdown.

A mall spokesperson said that wasn't the case. The mall doors were never closed and it was business as usual.

However, there were extra security patrols in the parking lots as well as a Boardman police officer sitting in his cruiser keeping an eye on the parking lot with binoculars.

The fight never materialized and it's unclear how the rumor started. Our newsroom received several calls about the incident.
