Karen Adams had little to say as she was brought into Girard Municipal Court Tuesday morning to face tampering with evidence charges in connection with Monday's shooting death of 15-year-old Robert Flynn.
Paperwork filed with the court by Hubbard Township police says the tampering charge accuses Adams of hiding a rifle.
Adams lived at the State Line Road home with her boyfriend Paul Sundy and their children. Adams and Sundy told police the shooting happened early Monday morning, after they received several threatening phone calls and a car full of teenage boys pulled into their driveway.
"She was braver than me," Sundy said. "I ran and hid when I saw them pull off weapons. I ran and hid. I really did."
Adams told a 911 dispatcher that they fired warning shots in the air to scare the teens.
Flynn was shot and died several hours later at St. Elizabeth Hospital. The Mahoning County Coroner's Office has ruled the death a homicide, saying the teen died of a gun shot wound to the head.
Police are continuing to investigate and say additional arrests and charges could be filed. Adams has been released after posting a $10,000 bond.
"We were defending our families," Sundy said.
Meanwhile, members of Flynn's family are trying to cope with the loss of a quiet boy, who was looking forward to his high school years. "He was a great kid," said Josh Flynn, Robert's older brother. "He was quiet and he loved sports. He will be deeply missed. Everybody loved him."
Sundy, says he and Adams run a deer farm and would never purposely harm anyone.
